Many Australian plants and flowers native to different regions of Australia are increasingly popular with both landscapers and home gardeners.
These native Australian plants include wildflowers, bush tucker plants, and screening trees and are readily available online.
Their popularity is due to their diverse range of foliage and flowers and the drought-tolerant nature of Australian native plants.
In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing new hybrid species and grafted specimens of native Australian plants. These improved varieties result in better-shaped plants and more vibrant and colourful displays. Grafted forms, in particular, enable many native flowering plants to thrive consistently in different soil and climate conditions.
Below, we have compiled a list of Australian Plants suitable for both home gardens and landscaping purposes, along with some common names. You can also find links to detailed information on individual species and online nurseries specialising in Australian native plants.

By grafting native plant varieties with good flowering characteristics onto hardier and more adaptable rootstock plants like Qualup Bells Pimelea (Pimelea physodes) and Diplolaena angustifolia (pictured on the right), it’s now possible to successfully grow native plants from Western Australia in a wider range of climates, including areas like the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne.
Eucalyptus species are at the forefront as standout specimen trees, often used as architectural focal points in landscaping. Landscape architects are increasingly looking to trees such as the Spotted Gum (Corymbia maculata) for its distinctive tall grey spotted trunk and the Lemon Scented Gum (Corymbia citriodora) as eye-catching feature trees. Grasses and strap-leafed plants like Dianella are also highly versatile for landscaping projects.
Great flowering plants for the home garden are another feature of many species, including; Pimelea, Phebalium, Lechenaultia, Verticordia, Rhodanthe, Darwinias, Chorizemas and Alyogyne huegelii. They are all worth exploring along with Grevilleas, Banksias, Boronias and Callistemons.
Of course, the drought-tolerant nature is an important factor, but the beauty of the flowers on many native species is reason enough to take a new look at our Australian native plants.
