The Red Mallee
Eucalyptus socialis is commonly called both the Red Mallee and the Grey Mallee, growing to only 6m with many trunks has white flowers during the flowering period.
These are a very hardy group of trees with lignotubers in the base of the tree that respond to damage by fire, wind or grazing by sending out new basal growth.
Flowering is prolific and it is a tree that will put on new growth in very dry summers, a useful attribute.
Landscaping Uses
Useful for its ability to grow in poor soils in dry conditions. Very attractive to bees during flowering from spring to summer.
It attracts bees and nectar seeking birds, and is very useful for revegetation projects and also suited a small garden tree.
Useful in areas of degraded soil where it can help reduce salinity levels in saline, dry inland areas, it does this by lowering the water table, if cleared the water table can rise, bringing salts to the surface.
