Waterhousea floribunda, commonly known as the Weeping Lilly Pilly or Brush Cherry, is an evergreen tree that is popular for its attractive foliage and weeping habit.
Fluffy white flowers in summer attract bees to the garden. The flowers are followed by small green fruit that turn reddish as they mature.
Found naturally growing from around Cairns in Queensland to Northern New South Wales along the coastal strip, this is one of four Waterhousia species.
This is one of a number of native trees that are making an impact with landscapers . It is used both for hedging as well as being a useful small to medium sized shade tree.
Waterhousea floribunda Care and Conditions
Best grown in full sun to part shade this is a versatile tree that copes with a range of conditions but not wet, cold frosty areas.
- Soil:
Waterhousea floribunda prefers well-draining soil rich in organic matter. It will tolerate a range of soils however is best in better soils. - Watering:
Although it will tolerate short periods of drought once established, good soil moisture is important. Deep watering during long dry periods is recommended, never slowing the soil become wet and soggy. - Fertilizer:
An Australian Native plant fertiliser applied in spring will improve growth and appearance. You could try native Osmocote or another Australian Native plant fertilizer early spring and autumn.
Many gardeners are now leaning to using fertilisers with micro nutrients and rock minerals and this should also be considered. - Height and Width:
Waterhousea floribunda can reach a height of 30 to 60 feet (9 to 18 meters) and a width of 15 to 35 feet (4.5 to 10.5 meters). The size can vary depending on the specific cultivar, growing conditions, and local climate. - Temperature:
Coming from a warm temperate to subtropical climate this is a versatile tree, however it does not cope well with frosts, especially when young. It is from in the USA and their it is recommended for USDA Zones 9-11. - Drought Tolerance

Pruning Waterhousia floribunda
Waterhousia floribunda can be grown a a specimen tree or screening tree where it will develop an open habit.
It can also be pruned as a slightly informal hedge, and it looks great. Pruning will increase foliage density. The best time to prune is in early spring. As a hedge prune twice a year and start pruning at an early age.
Left to grow without pruning the “Weeping Lilly Pilly” will easily reach 8 – 15m. Foliage will weep down to cover the base of the plant.
Pruning to maintain a smaller hedge or screen can be carries out in early spring.
