Native Aquatic Plants

Australian Native Aquatic Plants play an important role in the ecosystem. Native aquatic plants act as breeding grounds for fish as well as a being an effective biofilter.

Native Aquatic plants range from marginal plants that grow well in moist areas to plants that thrive when grown in water year round.

Species include : Carex appressa (tall sedge), Carex gaudichaudiana (tufted sedge), Cyperus exaltatus (umbrella sedge), Baumea rubiginosa (soft twig rush), Eleocharis sphacelata (tall spike rush), Juncus australis (austral rush), Lomandra longifolia sp. (spiny headed mat rush)

Uses for Native Aquatic Plants

Native aquatic plants provide habitat for wildlife as well a for land reclamation and landscaping projects. plants vary from sedges and rushes, to a number of native water lilies, some suited to deep water, others better grown in shallow water.

Used for wetland projects, pond margins as well as playing a role as bio filters Australian Native Aquatic plants are versatile and play an important role in many landscaping projects.

Some will grow in water, others cope well with both seasonal inundation and dry periods.

Some of the more ornamental varieties are also suited to growing in water features and fish ponds where they provide both interest and habitat.
