The Wallangarra White Gum
Eucalyptus scoparia or Wallangarra White Gum could be used as a feature tree in a large garden, or as a street tree in open situations or as a shade tree in rural locations.
Interesting because of its growth habit Eucalyptus scoparia is a reasonably fast growing tree however it does not develop tall trunks, at maturity will reach only 12m or so in height. This makes it a very useful tree mid sized tree for urban landscaping situations.
The smooth white trunk is an attractive feature with its shedding bark.
The foliage is a mid green and glossy and small white flowers appear in summer. The flowers are followed by small gum nuts.
Landscaping Uses
With a broad open crown it is a tree that provides good dappled shade. Excellent in larger gardens. parks or as a street tree.
With a slightly pendulous or weeping habit it has a naturally attractive appearance and the small white to cream coloured flowers in early summer attract insects and birds to the garden. The flowers are followed by small gumnuts.
Use Eucalyptus scoparia or Wallangarra White Gum as a specimen tree in larger gardens, as a street tree, or a as a shade tree.
In the broader landscape is makes a good windbreak tree, and in commercial developments its evergreen foliage and attractive white trunk applications break the harsh views of buildings and provide visual interest year round.
Problems
- Wet soils especially in coastal areas can cause root problems so good drainage is essential and saline soils should be avoided.
- Root disturbance through excavation should be avoided.
- Like most Eucalypts, Wallangarra White Gum should be planted away from buildings and drainage lines.
- Psyllids will attack the Wallangarra White Gum (Eucalyptus Scoparia), if the tree is healthy they usually do little damage, if the tree is under stress, such as very hot dry conditions they can cause damage.
