Eucalyptus polyanthemos or Red-Box is a medium sized Australian evergreen native tree.
This is a mid sized tree, growing to 13m and once established it is regarded as being drought tolerant. It grows naturally in Victoria and New South Wales in grassy or sclerophyll woodland.
Very useful as a tree that is also suited as a shade tree in a rural situation or parklands.
Useful for its ability to grow in very dry, stony and poor soils, also used in parks and rural street plantings.
The new or juvenile foliage is rounded with more mature foliage tending to lanceolate.
The name is ‘Silver dollar gum’ is put forward as a common name however it is Eucalyptus cinerea that is mostly called this. And then generally in America.
The flower buds are small but do appear clusters, the white blossoms attract both honey and native bees as well as nectar seeking native bird.
Growing Eucalyptus polyanthemos
Major requirements are a well drained soil and a position with good sun to a little shade.
Young trees should be staked for the first 6 months to enable a good straight trunk to be established. Water every week during the first 12 months to improve growth rate.
Allow the soil to dry between waterings.
This is tree that will grow well in very harsh conditions as ling as drainage is good. An important tree for apiarists.
