Grevillea hookeriana ‘Red Hooks’

A fairly large growing and spreading cultivar Grevillea hookeriana ‘Red Hooks’ may in fact be a chance hybrid between G. longifolia and G. tetragonoloba. It does look similar to G.Ivanhoe however the leaf structure differs, rather than the serrated look the foliage is more typically deeply lobbed.

The flowers are a Foliage is deeply lobbed and the deep bright crimson red flowers around 7 – 8 cm long (3 inches) typical toothbrush shape

This is a versatile plant, it copes with a range of soil conditions including moist soils and will also grow well in cool climates through to sub-tropical.

Growth habit is dense and once established it acts as a habitat for smaller birds like many of the Grevillea Species.

How to grow Grevillea ‘Red Hooks’

  • Choose a position with a well drained soil.
  • Full sun to part shade.
  • The best time to plant is in spring.
  • Supplement the top soil with well rotted compost and a little bone meal (Blood and Bone)
  • For dense hedges plant at around 2 metres apart.
  • Water in well and mulch around the plant.
  • Keep moist through the frost summer.
  • Once established water during long dry periods in summer.
  • In all but very poor soils fertiliser will not be required.

Grevillea hookeriana ‘Red Hooks’ be pruned after flowering to maintain a more compact growth habit. pruning will also assist with resistance to strong winds
