Acmena hemilampra

Acmena Hemilampra (syn Syzygium hemilampra) or Broad leaf Lilly Pilly is a medium sized tree that can reach up to 30m in height. Deep glossy green leaves with attractive new pink growth.

The canopy of this species is generally broader and more rounded that other Acmena species.

Also known as the ‘Blue Satin Ash’ in cultivation height is usually much lower to around 15 – 20m. As the tree ages the trunk becomes buttressed and the bark begins to show a peeling or flaking character.

Flowers are a creamy white and appear from spring through to summer, followed by white berries from autumn through winter. In good seasons the berries are numerous.

Landscaping uses

• Roadside plantings in rural areas
• Windbreak in rural areas
• Planted as a shade tree in parks or large gardens
• As a roadside screen to reduce noise
• Pruned as a hedge.

How to grow Acmena Hemilampra and Basic Care

Grows well in full sun to part shade and Acmena Hemilampra does not appear fussy about soil type as long as the soil is well drained.

Useful in near coastal plantings as it has a degree of tolerance to salt winds. Best pruned to a single trunk when young for most applications.
