Blackwood Tree
Acacia melanoxylon or Tasmanian Blackwood or Australian Blackwood is found widely in Southern Australia native to coastal Queensland New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria and has been used as timber tree and shade trees for many years.
Grown for both the timber as well as a feature tree in parks gardens and commercial developments, this is a tree that grows well in a range of conditions. Wholesale growers offer a range of pot sizes for sale.
Extremely variable in growth habit depending on soil and moisture availability. Reaching around 30m in height and In good conditions growth rate is fast and it will self seed. Many smaller specimens are seen as well.
Acacia melanoxylon (Acacia Blackwood) is used as a shade tree as well as a screening tree, and its timber is valued for furniture. Also coppiced and used for firewood.
Small pale flowers cover the tree in spring. Frost tolerant and hardy in cooler climates Acacia melanoxylon is not really suited to warmer climates.
How To Grow Acacia melanoxylon – Basic Care
These are a tree that require good drainage, they require a good deep soil and are not suited to areas subject to soil compaction.
Over time they can reach a height of 20m under good conditions, usually 10 -5m. In an open position they will form a broad crown, in dense plantings growth will be open and foliage sparse.
