The Yellow Box
Eucalyptus melliodora is commonly called the Yellow box, this is a varied species growing from 10 – 30m depending on growing conditions and individual plants.
Requires an acidic soil to grow well and is very variable in growth habit. It is a tree that has bark that will peel away in late summer to reveal an attractive white to rosey cream trunk.
A very popular tree with apiarists when in flower from spring through to summer. Lowers are followed by small fruit or gum nuts.
Attractive foliage and a bark that is regarded as deciduous, the darker brown outer bark, peeling away in autumn to show large patches of smooth white beneath.
This is a naturally a widely occurring species, found from Melbourne right through to Northern New South Wales in Queensland where it grows mainly in open forested areas and wooded grasslands.
It thrives in well drained soils that are slightly on the acidic side.
Landscaping Uses
Eucalyptus melliodora or Yellow box could be used as a feature tree in a large garden, or as a street tree in open situations or as a shade tree in rural locations. It is sought after by bee keepers as honey produced is prized.
This is a species with a fairly upright growth habit rather than a broad crown or dome.
Pruning
In general pruning is not required except for the removal of dead or damaged branches. This is a species that has a vigorous lignotuber, so if required the tree can be coppiced.
