Eucalyptus Species are also known as Gum Trees or Eucalypts. They are the most important tree species in Australia.
Eucalyptus Varieties Explained
Divided into three main genera, Angophora, Corymbia and Eucalyptus and with well over 700 species Eucalypts grow in a wide range of climates a differ greatly in growth habit.
So Angophora, Corymbia and Eucalyptus are Eucalypts, however only Eucalyptus are Eucalyptus species.
With so many species, Eucalyptus can also be grouped into types such as Mallee, Forest, Desert, Alpine and Coastal although many are very adaptable to climate and soil conditions.
Landscaping Uses
Many species Eucalypts are suitable for a variety of landscaping uses, as street trees and in the home garden.
Somes are grown as ornamental trees for the flowers, bark or the aromatic foliage. They are valuable as shade trees, and as habitat and a food source for native birds and animals.
Eucalyptus trees and species have evolved to be an extremely drought tolerant species. Eucalypts have a valuable place in landscaping, Eucalyptus papuana, Corymbia aparrerinja and the other species we call ‘Ghost Gums’ are used for the striking white trunks.
Flowering eucalypts such as Eucalyptus leucoxylon or Yellow Gum are long flowering and reasonably fast growing. Eucalyptus kitsoniana is a smaller growing Eucalypt suitable for street planting or even container growing. Eucalyptus maculata is another popular landscape tree.
