Regarded as one of the best red roses, Mr Lincoln is a hybrid tea rose popular for both the deep red flower and the fragrance
A tall growing bush rose, also available as a standard and as a climbing rose it is versatile and hardy.
As this is a rather vigorous grower it is best grown towards the back of the garden border.
Bred in the United States in 1964, and named after President Lincoln this is a rose that has proved itself over 60 years.
It is a thorny rose and also tall growing, so a spot away from pathways is suggested. Not to far back in the border as you will want to pick these wonderful red roses for cut flowers.
Fragrance is strong, reminiscent of Damask roses, a strong rich fragrance from the deep red flower, which is heightened on warm sunny days.
Care.
Mr Lincoln is a rose that grows well both in the ground as well as in containers. It is naturally a tall and vigorous growing rose and can reach nearly 2 metres ( 6ft) in height.
For best results:
- Choose a sunny position with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
- Plant in a humus-rich, well-drained soil.
- Allow around 1 metre between plants for good air circulation.
- Stake the rose if required.
- Water in well using a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
- Apply mulch around the base to help keep the roots cool and conserve soil moisture.
Growing Mr Lincoln Roses in Pots
Mr Lincoln grows well in large containers as well as in the garden.
Choose a quality pot approximately 60 cm wide and at least 90 cm deep. A container with straight sides or a wide neck is preferable, making future repotting much easier.
Use a premium-quality potting mix suitable for roses and ensure good drainage. Container-grown roses will need more frequent watering than those planted in the ground.
Watering and Feeding
Regular watering during dry periods, together with mulching and routine feeding, will help maximise flowering, healthy growth and overall plant performance.
Feed throughout the growing season using a specialist rose fertiliser. Dynamic Lifter can also be used as part of a regular feeding program to encourage strong growth and abundant flowers.
Pruning Mr Lincoln Roses
Mr Lincoln is easy to prune and responds well to annual maintenance.
Remove old, dead and damaged wood before reducing the remaining growth by around one-third. Regular pruning encourages healthy new shoots and promotes larger flowers on strong stems.
