A hybrid tea rose with large apricot-coloured flowers beautifully blended with warm coppery tones, Just Joey is one of the world’s most admired roses. Bred by Cants of Colchester in the United Kingdom and introduced in 1972, it quickly gained an international reputation for its exceptional blooms, rich fragrance, and reliable garden performance. Its warm colouring and distinctive ruffled petals have made it a favourite with rose enthusiasts for decades.
The vigorous bush will reach around 1.5 metres in height, producing its large blooms on long, single stems. The finest and largest flowers are produced during the main spring flush, while later flowering in the season brings a second flush of slightly smaller, though equally attractive, blooms. As the flowers open from tightly furled buds, the petals gently unfurl to reveal the beautifully frilled form that has become a hallmark of this outstanding variety. The blooms are excellent for cutting and hold well in a vase.
Fragrance is strong and best described as sweetly spiced, adding another dimension to this exceptional rose. Just Joey has received widespread recognition for its outstanding qualities, including the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Merit in 1993, before being voted the World’s Favourite Rose in 1994 by the World Federation of Rose Societies. These prestigious honours reflect its enduring appeal and confirm its place among the finest hybrid tea roses ever introduced.
Care and Planting your Just Joey rose
Best grown in a position in full sun or at least 6 hours of good sun a day and a well drained soil, water your new plant well the day before planting and you are ready to plant.
- Weed the area well and dig the soil over.
- Dig in some well rotted compost and aged cow manure.
- Prepare a planting hole the same depth that the rose was in the container.
- Gently remove the plant from the container.
- Place in the planting hole and backfill.
- Water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
- Lightly mulch around the plant.
- Water deeply as the soil dries over the first spring and summer.
We suggest using a general purpose rose food such as Sudden Impact for roses with an application every 8 weeks from early spring through summer. Regular seaweed fertiliser application will also help keep your Just Joey Rose Bush flowering freely.
