Roses are available for sale year-round, either as potted plants or as bare-rooted plants from early autumn to late winter.
Modern Rose Varieties are generally classified as:
Hybrid Tea:
(Origin: France, mid-1800s – result of crossing Tea and Hybrid Perpetual roses)
Famous for large, high-centered blooms on long stems—ideal for cutting.
Known for long pointy buds on long stems, great for cut flowers but sometimes lacks perfume and can be prone to disease.
Floribunda:
(Origin: Denmark, early 1900s – hybrid of Hybrid Tea and Polyantha)
Compact bushes with clusters of blooms, great for mass color in gardens.
A more compact plant with shorter stems and better disease resistance, a cross between a polyantha and a Hybrid Tea.
Miniature:
Bred to retain rose form on a tiny scale; often houseplants or edging plants)
Small in stature and bloom size but fully-formed rose appearance.
Characterized by small bushes and small flowers, descended from the dwarf China Rose ‘Rouletii.’
Grandiflora Roses:
(Origin: USA, 1950s – hybrid of Hybrid Tea and Floribunda)
Large blooms like Hybrid Teas, but in clusters on tall plants.
Heirloom or Old Garden Roses:
(All rose types known before 1867, including Gallica, Damask, Alba, etc.)
Fragrant, historical roses with once-yearly blooms and romantic form.
Often very fragrant, these European-style roses thrive in cool climates and include Damask, Gallica, Albas, Bourbons, and Portland.
Polyantha Roses:
(Origin: France, late 1800s – cross between dwarf China roses and Rosa multiflora)
Compact, bushy plants producing profuse clusters of small to medium-sized flowers. Known for hardiness, continuous bloom, and suitability for borders or mass plantings.
Rambling Roses:
These roses live up to their name by sprawling among neighbouring plants like climbing types but with a less upright growth habit. They produce many flowers but do not typically repeat bloom.
Rugosa Roses:
(Origin: East Asia – species rose Rosa rugosa and its hybrids)
Extremely hardy, salt-tolerant, and disease-resistant shrubs with wrinkled (“rugose”) foliage. Fragrant blooms followed by large hips, ideal for naturalizing and coastal planting.
English Roses (David Austin Types):
A Floribunda cross designed to provide the best of everything: fragrance, repeat flowering, and hardiness.
Climbing Roses:
(Not a separate class by origin – selected for growth habit)
Long canes ideal for training on arches, fences, or trellises; many repeat-blooming.
Shrub Roses
(Broad class – includes hybrids and species roses bred for landscape use)
Hardy, repeat-flowering, and disease-resistant with informal shapes.

These are the world’s most popular flowering plants, with their origins in China. The first cultivated rose varieties reached Europe in the late 18th century. Even before that, roses had significant historical and cultural importance in Europe, from the War of the Roses to Josephine’s rose collection at Chateau de Malmaison.
