Bare rooted roses are available for sale in the winter months when rose plants are dormant. Usually cheaper than potted roses bare rooted roses are a great way to establish a rose garden.

If you buy them at the right time, from a reputable nursery, they will produce good flowers in their first season.

Bare Rooted vs Potted Roses

If we look at the advantages and disadvantages of Bare Rooted Roses vs Potted Roses we come up with the following list

Advantages.

  1. Bare rooted roses are easily sent by mail order and you can buy them online.
  2. They are sold when dormant, usually pruned and ready for planting immediately.
  3. They are often cheaper.
  4. Often a larger variety of roses are available.
  5. You are buying a plant that will have its energy focused on new root development and growth. In the long term this can mean healthier plant.
  6. You often get access to ‘New Release’ roses more readily.

Disadvantages

  1. You can’t see the plant in growth or in flower.
  2. They are often smaller in size.
  3. They don’t look as good immediately.

Reliable suppliers will provide quality roses. Avoid purchasing bare rooted roses from markets and also when they are ‘on sale’, late in the season and new growth has already commenced. Mail Order roses from reliable suppliers are the best way to purchase a healthy rose.

The time to buy Bare root roses is during a period about 3 months over the winter. Buying bare rooted roses is a great way of starting a rose garden. Remember to purchase during winter as bare rooted plants purchased in spring to summer may not be up to expectations. Purchase form reputable suppliers, rose specialists are best.

Planting Bare Root Roses

The best time to plant bare rooted roses are best planted as soon as they are received. This prevents the roots from drying out and will allow root growth to commence as soon as the soil is warm enough.

We suggest watering in new plants with a liquid seaweed fertilizer as this helps to overcome transplant shock.

Standard roses and weeping roses in particular will need some form of support. (see rose supports)
