An english rose by David Austin, Jude the Obscure is a rose that has been popular with Australian gardeners since it was first released.
This is a shrub or bush rose with large cup shaped yellow to apricot flowers. The flowers are large, with the petals being darker on the reverse outside than the inside.
Fragrance is regarded as strong. and described as being reminiscent of sweet grapes and guava. The fragrance is more intense in warmer climates and this, along with the attractive flowers make a must for Australian gardens.
The name Jude the Obscure, celebrates the Thomas Hardy Novel released 100 years before the rose in 1895.
Landscaping Uses
This is a rose that demands to planted where the fragrance can be appreciated, near a pathway, garden seat or outdoor entertaining area all would be appropriate.
It is a rose also available as a standard rose and could be used along a formal walkway. This is a strong growing variety and could be trained as a small to medium climbing rose if desired.
Care and Planting your Jude the Obscure rose
With a little deadheading you will have flowers from spring right through summer, so this is a task well worth carrying out.
Best grown in a position in full sun or at least 6 hours of good sun a day and a well drained soil, water your new plant well the day before planting and you are ready to plant.
- Weed the area well and dig the soil over.
- Dig in some well rotted compost and aged cow manure.
- Prepare a planting hole the same depth that the rose was in the container.
- Gently remove the plant from the container.
- Place in the planting hole and backfill.
- Water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
- Lightly mulch around the plant.
- Water deeply as the soil dries over the first spring and summer.
We suggest using a general purpose rose food such as Sudden Impact for roses with an application every 8 weeks from early spring through summer. Regular seaweed fertiliser application will also help keep your Maurice Utrillo Rose Bush flowering freely.
