Pierre de Ronsard Rose
Pierre de Ronsard Rose

A Classic Climbing Rose

A fragrant climbing rose named after a french poet, Pierre de Ronsard is also known as the Eden Rose.

Over time it has become one of the best known roses in the world, and with large flowers that will continue through the season it is easy to see why.

Also available from some growers as a weeping standard, it is in the Rose Hall of Fame.

Large double flowers with pink to white blooms appear from spring right through summer. The fragrance of the Pierre de Ronsard rose is not strong, however the flowers more than make up for this.

Care

This is a rose that as a climber will reach around 3 metres in height and spread tomatoes similar distance. It is best grown in full sun to a little afternoon shade. Look for a position with around 6 hours of good sun each day for optimal growth.

  1. Prepare the soil well by digging in good amounts of compost and aged cow manure before planting.
  2. Provide appropriate support in the form of wires, trellis or other support.
  3. Plant at the same depth the rose was in the container.
  4. Water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
  5. Attach to the support with soft ties that do not damage the stems.
  6. Water regularly through the first two spring and summer periods.
  7. Mulch around the rose to maintain a cool moist root run.
  8. Fertilise each spring with a general purpose rose fertiliser.

Ongoing Care

Deadhead spent flowers to help promote repeat flowering.

Prune climbing roses each year in early winter to maintain a good size and growth habit.
