Roses Plant Profile and Rose growing hints.
Roses are the most popular flowering plant in the world, originating in China the first cultivated roses were first introduced to Europe in the late 18th century. But even before this roses had their place in Europe, the War of the Roses between York (the white rose) and Lancaster (the red rose), the rose collection of Josephine at Chateau de Malmaison and the use of roses in Roman celebrations, yes roses have a long history. In brief, roses like lots os sun and good air circulation, a soil rich in humus, moist but well drained. Mulch around roses to retain moisture, and water well when establishing, but remember, once established roses and reasonably drought tolerant. |

ROSE DISEASES and TREATMENT
Powdery Mildew
Caused: by the fungus Sphaerotheca pannosa
Leaves, buds, and stems are covered with a white powdery coating
Treatment:
fungicide application. Pruning and romoving l dead or diseased canes in the spring will reduce the initial fungus population
Black Spot
Caused:
by a fungus Diplocarpon rosae . Can cause almost complete defoliation of bushes by early autumn . It produces a weakened bush, leading to cane dieback, stem canker.
Treatment: fungicide application. Diseased leaves on the ground should be collected and disposed of, (not in compost)
PESTS
Aphids
Pyrethrum sprays, garlic sprays, soap sprays, white oil, a blast with the hose.
Possums
Possums chew the new growth on roses. Spraying them with a solution of quassia chips and water, is a suggested remedy as is lime sulphur spray. A spray called 'Poss Off' is available.
ROSE PRUNING
Once established ( 2-3 years ) climbing roses need to be heavily pruned each year, by removing up to 1/3 of the old growth you give the climbing rose a chance to renew itself, stronger growth and better flowers.
Remember its the healthy young growth that produces the flowers. Remember you are aslo pruning for shape, so start by removing any suckers from from below the graft, then remove any weak, twiggy or dying growth, then remove unwanted growth, canes that are growing in the wrong place. Now its time to be ruthless, remove up to 1/3 of the old growth. When pruning and training climbing roses you need to encourage the main canes to grow horizontally in order to s encourage side shoots to grow from the main canes, climbing roses flower at the end of shoots so this way you will have more shoots and more flowers.
Remember to dispose of all cuttings and clean up all leaves dropped on the ground, this helps prevent disease.
POSSUMS EATING ROSE BUDS
Possums love rose buds, so what can be done to deter them?
Possum deterents include:
Poss
Off, a deterrent made of a mix of chilli and garlic.
Camphor is said to be a deterent to possums.
Scat, made from aluminium sulphate.
D-Ter is an animal repellent.
Arbor Co's Poss Off, an electronic device that emits ultrasonic sound waves.
Stray Ban is another electronic device,

ROSE TYPES
Modern Roses are generally classified as:
Hybrid Tea
Long pointy buds on long stems.
Great cut flowers, sometimes lacking in perfume and a little disease prone.
Floribunda
A more compact growth, shorter stems and better disease resistance.
Cross between a polyantha and a hybrid tea.
Miniature
Small bushes and small flowers (logical really). Miniaure roses are descendants of the dwarf China Rose 'Rouletii'.
Grandiflora
A cross between hybrid tea
and floribunda. Flowers in clusters rather than singles, but still on a long stem. Grandiflora tend to be taller growing types.
Heirloom Roses or Old Garden Roses
Usually very fragrant, old european type roses that do well in a cool climate. They include: Damask, Gallica, Albas, Bourbons and Portland.
Polyantha
Low growing, small flowers, but a repeat blooming type.
Rambling Roses
Just what the name says, it will ramble all over the neigbouring plants, like a climbing rose but not as upright. Lots of flowers but not a repaeat blooming type.
Rugosa
A sturdy shrub type, often used for ground cover or hedging.
English Roses (David Austin Roses)
A Floribunda cross designed to provide the best of everything, fragrant, repeat flowering, and hardy.
Climbing Roses
Long canes that can be trained to cover a wall or trellis. Repeat blooming.
