Low’s Boat Orchid
A species widely used in hybridisation Cymbidium lowianum is a species orchid introduced into cultivation in the mid 1800s. it is an important orchid and is regarded as one of the cornerstones of many modern day hybrids.
This is a stunning orchid species sometimes called Lows Boat Orchid, Cymbidium lowianum is known for its vibrant flowers, typically produced in clusters. Flowers are typically green or yellow, often accented with striking red or purple lips and markings. They appear on long, arching spikes carrying fifteen or so large flowers.
First collected most likely in Burma (Myanmar) in the 1800s by William Boxall a plant collector the species is named the company who he collected this particular orchid for Messrs Hugh Low & Co.’s
How To Grow Cymbidium lowianum
Basic requirements
This is not a difficult orchid to grow. Although it comes from tropical zones it naturally grows at altitudes at around 1500 – 2500 metres so it grows well in cooler climate zones.
- Exposure/ Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; can tolerate some direct morning sunlight.
- Soil Type: Well-draining orchid mix or a mix of bark and sphagnum moss.
- Soil Moisture: Keep consistently moist but not soggy.
- pH Level: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5 to 7.0).
- Climate Zone: Warm temperste. Best suited for USDA Zones 9-11.
- Drainage: Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
- Water requirements: Regular watering during the growing season; reduce in winter.
How To Plant Cymbidium lowianum
Choose a container that has a diameter of around 10 cm (4 inches) wider that the plant base. We prefer to use terracotta pots.
- Use a specialized orchid potting mix with good drainage.
- Ensure the pot has drainage holes; plant in spring or after flowering.
- Plant and form in the potting mix.
- Water in with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
- Position the plant where it will receive bright, indirect light.
Ongoing Care
- Remove spent flower spikes after blooming to encourage new growth.
- Trim dead or yellowing leaves to maintain plant health.
- Fertilize with a balanced orchid fertilizer, or a slow release organic fertiliser immediately after flowering. We prefer an ordinary organic fertiliser, applying just a little every 2 weeks for 2 months.
- An occasional application of a liquid seaweed fertiliser when watering can also be befeficial.
Dividing and repotting
You will need to repot your Cymbidium lowianum every 3 years or when it begins to outgrow the pot. You can choose to divide it at this time if is large enough.
- Landscaping Uses: Accent plant, focal point on a patio or in garden beds, or container plant just about anywhere.
- Garden Styles: Suited for tropical, Asian-inspired gardens, or modern landscapes.
- Special Uses: Used in floral arrangements as a cut flower where the blooms can last 3 – 6 weeks. Pick flowers spikes when one or two of the individual flowers have opened. Also used as ornamental plants for patios.

- Foliage: Long, narrow, arching leaves that can reach up to 60 cm (2 feet) in length.
- Root system: Thick, fleshy roots that require airflow and drainage.
A few varieties are available, one with variegated foliage and others with differing flower colours.
