
An easy orchid to grow, Cymbidium erythraeum is an epiphytic species, cool growing and on the small side.
Attractive flowers with a medium scent, long narrow foliage and a natural weeping habit are all characteristics.
This is a Cymbidium species used widely in hybridisation, with both Cym. erythraeum var. erythraeum and the yellow flowering Cym. erythraeum var. flavum being found in a number of hybrids. This s a species that will flower of relatively small plants so this is a useful trait.
Known as the The Red-Spotted Lip Cymbidium, the species is from the Himalayas, Nepal through to Vietnam. It grows at elevations so will grow well in cooler climates.
How to Grow Cymbidium erythraeum
Temperature
Ideally a rang of 18-24 °C daytime and 10-16 °C Nighttime. The nighttime drop is important for good growth.
Soil/Growing Medium
Being an epiphytic orchid a free draining potting mix is essential. Cym. erythraeum can also be grown as a mounted specimen or in a slatted orchid basket.
Light
Good strong filtered light is best, a position in dappled shade or under shade cloth is ideal.
Watering
Watering thoroughly one a week from late spring through summer is a good starting point. The growing medium should never completely dry out or become wet and soggy.
During hot summer weather, mist spraying in the morning will provide a little extra humidity especially in drier climates or indoors.

Use a low nitrogen organic fertiliser from late spring through summer very 3 – 4 weeks
