The Lipstick Maple

If you are looking for a large tree with brilliant autumn colour then the Lipstick Maple is one to consider.
A beautiful deciduous tree with lipstick red autumn foliage Acer rubrum comes in a number of forms.
They are well suited for use as large specimen or feature tree, and also can be used to line driveways.
With large crowns they can also be used as shade trees in larger gardens.
Acer rubrum varieties
- October Glory – This is a variety with an upright growth habit. Foliage tends to last well into late autumn to early winter depending on the climate. It will eventually reach around 15 metres in height with a a canopy spread of around 8 metres.
- Autumn Blaze – Again brilliant red autumn foliage, this variety has a slightly more rounded canopy and a dense growth habit.
- Fairview Flame – Good green foliage from spring through to autumn when it turns to orange/red. Reaches around 10 – 15 metres with a canopy around 10 metres across at maturity.
All varieties are grow best in a humus rich soil in part shade to full sun. The root system is regarded as invasive.
Like many trees the root system will find its way into leaking drainage systems and as the tree matures it can lift pathways and similar if planted to closely.
As all of these are large growing trees if you are looking for dwarf maples with good red foliage Acer palmatum varieties are more suitable.
