Acer negundo or Box elder. A widely used medium sized deciduous tree growing to 20 m depending on cultivar.
Acer negundo variegatum is is a deciduous tree with pale green leaves and a light cream margin, fairly fast growing tree with a nice upright habit also know as the Variegated box elder and also simply as Acer negundo.
This is an excellent tree for larger gardens or for use parks as a shade tree, we have also seen it used for street plantings however as it can reach 8m + it is not generally used under power lines.
Growing Conditions
Tolerant of a wide range of climate and soil conditions A. negundo variegatum is relatively drought tolerant once established, however in extended hot dry periods it will require some water. Best in full sun and does prefer good drainage.
A. negundo variegatum can revert to a pure green, any branches that revert should be removed. Flowers are insignificant but are followed by hanging seed pods, Sterile so no self seeding and not a weed problem
More Acer negundo Varieties
- A. negundo ‘Sensation’ – This is a selected variety that will grow to 10m. The strong points of Acer negundo ‘Sensation’ include the more symmetrical and uniform growth habit, making it a better stand alone feature tree. The autumn tones are also more vibrant, brilliant red to yellows and orange depending a little on the climate.
- A. negundo ‘Flamingo’ – The name comes from the new foliage which have a distinct pink colouration in spring. This does fade are the foliage matures.
- A. negundo ‘Kellys Gold’– This is a smaller growing box elder, Kellys Gold has bright yellow autumn foliage and will reach around 5 – 7 metres in height.
- A. negundo ‘Violacea ‘– One of the few with fascinating flowers in spring. The flowers are a brilliant mid to deep pink in spring and appear on bare branches. New foliage is bronze to green.
