Useful as a street tee, Acer platanoides ‘Globosum’ is a small deciduous tree with attractive green foliage. The dense canopy and compact growth habit make it an excellent choice in many landscaping situations.
Also known as the Norway Globe Maple this is a relatively slow growing tree that will reach around 5 – 7 m in height with a spread of around 5m, and provides good shade. It is a little shallow rooted so best planted in a situation where root disturbance by mowing or digging is not likely.
As well as a useful street tree Acer platanoides ‘Globosum’ is also used in commercial areas to provide shade in open areas. It is low maintenance once established and seems to cope well with poor soil conditions. Flowers are insignificant and autumn colour is a nice golden yellow.
Pruning Acer platanoides ‘Globosum’
The beauty of Acer platanoides ‘Globosum’ is the natural tight ‘mop top’. Pruning is generally not required for this well behaved tree, although after a number of years they can be pruned back to shape and size if required.
