Acer palmatum ‘Hana Matoi’

One of the most attractive of the Japanese Maples is ‘Hana Matoi’. This is a weeping maple, very attractive red foliage with pink green and cream variegation. To add to this the autumn colour of Acer palmatum ‘Hana Matoi’ is a brilliant bright red.

An Acer palmateum dissectum cultivar, ‘Hana Matoi’ will develop stronger variegation as it becomes established.

Landscaping Uses.

With such outstanding foliage Acer palmatum ‘Hana Matoi’ is best used as a feature tree. Given room, and some protection from the sun in hottest part of the day, this is a standout ornamental tree.

It will grow in containers, usually a little smaller in size, and slower in growth rate.

Care

Prepare the soil well with some well rotted compost and aged manure. Choose a position which is protected from hot winds and then in the hottest part of the day.

Stake new plants and water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser. Mulch to provide a cool moist root run.

Water well through the first spring and summer and until well established. Uses a slow release fertiliser in spring and renew mulch each year.

Notes – Foliage colour and intensity will vary with climate. Colour can be more intense in cooler areas.

  • Hana matoi is a sport of Toyama nishiki a Japanese Maple with leaf tones of greens, pinks, and creams. Hana matoi ramps up the pinks especially when grown in good sun, in shaded areas the tones are more on the cream and green with less pronounced pink.
  • Toyama nishiki itself is a variegated form Toyama, a red dissectum type.
  • And Nishiki means ‘Brocade’. in English.
