Parthenocissus quinquefolia
A low maintenance plant Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a fast growing palnt with attractive foliage that grows well in most soils and best in good light.
This is a self clinging vine, and as it only requires a little pruning is a very popular climbing plant.
In summer it provides a lush green wall, in winter it allows the sun to penetrate so it can be used to control temperatures.
We would only plant this against fences or walls where itv can be controlled. Planting near trees can cause problems if it is allowed to spread through them
Grown for the brilliant foliage in Autumn, this is a vine with lobed leaves hence one of the common named of five finger ivy.
Also worth considering is Parthenocissus Tricuspidata – Boston Ivy
How To Grow Virginia Creeper
Green foliage is attractive through the year and the brilliant reds at the end of the season are a standout.
- It will grow in full sun to shade however foliage colour is better when it receives good light. Foliage colour is also more vibrant in colder climates.
- Support is required.
- This is a climber that copes with most soil conditions which makes it easy to grow.
- It is frost tolerant down to around -15C.
- The only real problem is the self clinging nature when grown on timber.
Is Virginia Creeper Invasive?
Yes it regarded as invasive if it escapes into bushland and similar areas. So plant with this in mind.
