With very attractive ground cover plant Epimedium x perralchicum Frohnleiten’ is one of the easiest to care for and and hardiest of all of the Epimediums. This is a an old cultivar from Germany this is an evergreen perennial with sulphur yellow flowers in spring and attractive foliage year round.
Over time it forms a very dense clump which makes it such a good ground cover plats for difficult positions in the garden.
Growing well in shade beneath deciduous trees, it will also grow well in part sun. This is a drought tolerant plant once established and also low maintenance.
Care
Like most Epimedium species, Epimedium ‘ Frohnleiten’ prefers part shade, the actual amount of shade will depend a little on the climate. In general, the hotter the climate the more shade. We find that it grows very well in good morning sun with some light afternoon shade.
How to Plant
- Plant Epimedium ‘ Frohnleiten’ in any well drained soil, digging through some well rotted compost and aged cow manure before planting.
- Water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
- Water through the first summer if conditions are dry.
- Fertilise using a slow release organic type fertiliser in late winter.
Pruning
If you prune this plant in late winter before the flower buds appear not only will the flowers stand out but the foliage will be refreshed.
We prune right back to ground level at least every two years using either shears or a line trimmer.
