Epimedium grandiflorum 'violaceum'
Epimedium grandiflorum ‘violaceum’

A lovely plant for the shade garden, Epimedium grandiflorum ‘violaceum’ starts the spring with new bronze coloured foliage. As the season progresses the foliage turns to a mid green and the tall flower stalks appear.

The flowers are a violet purple, long stems and although small are very attractive. The foliage forma a dense clump over time so this is another Epimedium species that makes a good ground cover plant for part shade.

This will, be deciduous plant in colder climates, in our temperate climate it looses some leaves over winter yet holds others.

Care

Once established this is a very easy care low maintenance plant. Originally from Japan where it is widely found, also from Korea.

  • Prepare the soil well ensuring drainage is good.
  • Add some extra compost and aged cow manure in porter soils.
  • Plant and water in well.

Fertiliser can be in the form of a top of compost and cow manure, a general purpose fertiliser or fish and seaweed liquid types. This is not a plant that requires a lot of fertiliser.
