Tree Ferns, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
Tree Ferns are large woody ferns and those offered for sale are usually from the species Cyathea or Dicksonia. Tree Ferns in general prefer a shade position with moist conditions, usually forest conditions.
Tree Ferns will thrive when these conditions are reproduced when building or landscaping, the shady side of building or factory, under eaves or next to fences facing south.
Mulch and leaf litter around the base of the fern will help reproduce natural conditions.
The Tree Fern Dicksonia antarctica or soft tree fern is the fern that can be harvested with licence. (the ferns has fronds removed and roots cut of when sold, roots will regrow when planted.
Cyathea australis or rough tree fern is the most common tree fern, it cannot be harvested in the same way and needs a root system to survive.
Specialist nurseries offer a range of tree ferns of different sizes for purchase, ready to transplant into any landscaping situation.
Due to demand some nurseries are establishing small plantations to ensure a sustainable source of tree ferns.
