Didymochlaena truncatula (Tree Maidenhair Fern)

Didymochlaena truncatula is a maidenhair type fern that develops a short trunk over time hence the name ‘Tree Maidenhair Fern’. Tree Maidenhair Ferns grow naturally in a moist well drained soil in a filtered shade position and are also known as also known as the Mahogany Ferns.

The name Mahogany fern comes from the colour of the new emerging fronds, they turn to a deeper green as they age.

In cultivation they are mostly grown as indoor plants.

Didymochlaena truncatula Care

Didymochlaena truncatula (Tree Maidenhair Fern) prefer a moist shady position and can be grown in containers indoors.

A well lit area but with indirect light is best. Try an African Violet potting mix for growing indoors.

A combination of strong filtered light (not direct sun),  good humidity and regular fertiliser will improve growth rate.

  • Keep moist at all times.
  • Fertilise only from mid spring to late summer.
  • Be patient when waiting for it form a trunk, this can take a number of years.
  • Height – Over time up to 2m in height.
  • Spread – .5 – 1m on a mature specimen.’
  • Growth rate – Slow
