Golden Cane Palms. Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses

Golden Cane Palms or Dypsis lutescens are probably the most widely used palm for landscaping on Australia’s’ east coast. It is a species from the damp areas of Madagascar where it is found growing along the small streams.

With attractive golden stems and mid green foliage this most versatile and attractive palm tree this is a clumping palm tree, the Golden Cane Palm is one of the most common palm trees in Australia.

With a number of desirable characteristics including the lack of spikes and the ability to grow in low light conditions. It is used widely as an indoor plant. They can reach a height of 10m plus, often smaller when container grown.

Care

Golden Cane palms do require regular watering, they are a clustering palm and will send up extra golden stems and add more lush green foliage. They area popular choice for a variety of uses, as a screening plant, as a background plant near a pool or as a potted plant.

One of the main attractions of the Golden Cane Palm is in fact the multi stemmed or clumping habit, they make a great screening plant especially in moist conditions.

As the clump grows they can be thinned if required, simply use a sharp spade to remove the shoots .

If you are going to prune these plants cut the foliage right back to the stem. Remember that these plants love water, so plant away from drainage pipes, pools and ponds as the root system will find any water that is around.

Golden cane palms are suitable for indoor use, but also do well in full sun. In cooler climates keep Golden Cane Palms indoors.
