Butia capitata is also known as the Jelly palm, Pindo palm and Wine palm is originally from Brazil and Uruguay and is used for its fruit in those countries.
With a thick trunk, this is a sturdy palm tree, in cooler climates it is a tree that requires very well drained soil. These tree will grow well as far south as Adelaide and Melbourne in the right position.
Varieties do differ, with some producing fruit that is less acidic and with less fibre. This becomes important if you are intending to use the fruit.
New trees should be staked or anchored until the root system established itself.
