Sabal Minor Dwarf Palmetto Palm

Sabal minor is commonly called the Dwarf Palmetto Palm. It is a small or dwarf palm tree growing from 1-3 m depending on conditions.

Native to the United States where it grows over a large area it is cold tolerant and can reach to 2m before it develops a trunk of any substance.

An excellent landscaping plant used as a feature or planted in clumps. It will grow in part shade so it makes a good understory plant for tropical style gardens although in itself it is not a tropical plant. Foliage is green with an attractive fan shape.

Foliage is a blue green colour and this low growing palm tree makes an excellent understory plant for a tropical themed garden.

The plant will send down a very deep tap root, this makes mature specimens very difficult to transplant. Wholesale nurseries concentrate on container grown plants of smaller sizes. This deep tap root has advantages in that it helps the plant through hot dry summers. A mature specimen id reasonably drought resistant.

How To Grow The Dwarf Palmetto Palm – Basic Care

  • Best is a sunny position to good filtered light.
  • Humus rich soil will be best for good growth.
  • Frost and cold winters can damage fronds.

Sabal minor or Dwarf Palmetto Palm is a palm suitable for growing in pots or in the garden. These palms have a slow growth rate and do require good moisture.
