Triangle Palm ‘Dypsis decaryi’

The sun loving Triangle Palms (Dypsis decaryi or Neodypsis decaryi) are a striking looking palm with leave stalks originating from three distinct areas around the trunk. Blue green foliage is an asset for this ornamental palm tree. Also used an an indoor plant as it seems to cope with low light situations.

As it matures the fronds form a very geometric patters, fanning out to form a ‘upside down triangle’ on the trunk. It is also a palm tree that can be grown both in the garden and indoors. Wonderful features in the background of a tropical garden.

Each frond can reach around 2 – 3 m in length and over time the trunk can get to 10m plus. So this is not a small palm tree, however in cultivation, and when container grown the size of the trunk will be limited in most occasions.

It is the long arching fronds that rise from the centre of the plant that are the main attraction of this palm tree. Feathery blue green foliage, Best grown in the open where its unusual growth habit can be appreciated. Or perhaps container grown in a courtyard against a a wall.

Growing conditions and Care

Triangle Palms are hardy but do prefer a moist soil but well drained. Growing to 15m the triangle palm makes a great feature in the landscape and can be successfully grown in large pots. An excellent plant for that tropical look besides the pool. Triangle Palms or Dypsis decaryi originate from the Madagascan rainforest, and are reasonably fast growing once established.
