Dypsis leptocheilos (Teddy Bear Palm / Red Neck Palm)

  • Facebook
  • Pinterest

With its distinctive fibrous red crownshaft, Dypsis leptocheilos is easy to recognise and is commonly known as the Red Neck Palm or Teddy Bear Palm. The soft, fibrous texture around the crown contrasts beautifully with its smooth trunk and lush tropical foliage.

This elegant palm originates from Madagascar and is best suited to warm, frost-free climates. While it can be grown as far south as Sydney in protected microclimates, it performs best in tropical to subtropical regions where growth is faster and more reliable.

Reaching around 10–12 metres in height, the Teddy Bear Palm becomes a striking feature in the landscape. Its silvery trunk, combined with deep green arching fronds, creates a strong tropical presence.

The canopy is open and airy, allowing filtered light to pass through, which makes it an excellent choice for layering in tropical-style gardens.

Growing Conditions

Dypsis leptocheilos thrives in warm, humid environments and prefers consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged.

Best performance is achieved in:

  • Tropical and subtropical climates
  • Sheltered garden positions
  • Frost-free coastal areas
  • Warm urban microclimates

While it can tolerate light shade, full sun encourages stronger growth and better trunk development in established plants.

Good drainage is essential, as waterlogged soils can quickly lead to decline.

Care

The Teddy Bear Palm is relatively low maintenance once established but responds well to good care.

For best results:

  • Water regularly during dry periods, especially while young
  • Apply a quality palm fertiliser in spring and summer
  • Maintain organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture
  • Avoid heavy clay soils unless significantly improved

Growth rate improves significantly when both moisture and nutrients are consistent.

Landscaping Uses

Dypsis leptocheilos is widely used as a feature palm due to its striking trunk and tropical appearance.

Ideal uses include:

  • Feature planting in tropical gardens
  • Poolside landscaping
  • Courtyard focal points
  • Subtropical garden design
  • Layered tropical planting schemes
  • Resort-style landscapes

Its elegant form and soft-textured crownshaft make it a strong visual focal point without being overly dense or heavy in appearance.

Climate and Suitability

This palm is best suited to frost-free environments. In cooler regions such as southern parts of Australia, it may require protection from cold winds and occasional frost.

In marginal climates, planting in a warm, sheltered position near walls or paved areas can improve survival and performance.
