Philodendron Rojo Congo
Philodendron Rojo Congo

If you would like to add colour and shape to your home then Philodendron Rojo Congo is well worth a look.

As this naturally a shade loving plant it grows well indoors and in warmer climates makes great garden plant as well.

This is large leafed Philodendron with amazing new copper/red foliage, red stems as well. As the foliage ages it turns to deep green and the stems to a deeper red.

Care

This is plant that will get to around 1.5 metres (4.5ft) in height sometimes taller, with a slightly smaller spread, so over time it will need a little room. It grows well in indirect light or light shade and it is not suited to areas that experience frosts.

Watering

Being easy to water makes it a fairly hardy indoor plant. Simply wait for the soil / potting mix to dry and then water deeply.

Do not let the pot sit in a saucer of water as this can cause the soil to become to wet and cause root problems.

If the leaves of plant begins to droop, chances are it needs watering.

Fertiliser

Indoors use a 50% application of a 12 month slow release fertiliser in spring each year.

Repotting

Generally repot every 2 years, again do this early in spring.

Pruning

Generally not required other than the removal of any dead or damaged foliage.

How to keep Rojo congo looking good.

  • Wipe the leaves with a damp soft cloth to remove dust.
  • Use a pebble mulch to help prevent Fungus Gnats.
  • Remember to repot every 2 years.

Problems

  • Drooping leaves, lack of water.
  • Yellow leaves, overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Brown dried leaves – Too much sun.

Older leaves will naturally drop off as they die.

The Botanical name is Philodendron tatei ssp melanochlorum rojo congo
