Himalayacalamus porcatus – Nepalese Blue Bamboo
As with most of the Himalayan bamboos, Himalayacalamus porcatus or Nepalese Blue is a variety that prefers cooler climates. As the name suggests it is from the Himalayas and although it will grow in warmer areas it will require some shade in these situations.
This is one of those with the powdery coating on the culms which give it that much desired ‘blue’ appearance. Reaching a height of around 3 – 4 m even in Sydney it will benefit from some protection from the hot afternoon sun.
This is a tight clumping bamboo, excellent in smaller gardens. Young shoots emerge in spring, are very dark in color when emerging, the dark sheafs drop away to reveal the new powdery white culms around 10cm in diameter, which turn to that desirable blue green as they mature.
