A versatile screening plant that can be grown in the ground or in containers, Darwin has the advantage of a warmer climate that will allow some species of Bamboo to be grown that will not survive in the southern states. In fact most of the really good clumping types of bamboo will grow well in Darwin especially the Bambusa, Dendrocalamus and Gigantochola species.

It is the clumping bamboos that grow best in Darwin and other tropical areas. Running types are not as suited.

You still need to look for a well drained soil, and sandy loam that does not get water logged will be suitable. As in most areas, bamboo will grow well in containers, although the really tall varieties are better suited to growing inn the ground. They will establish a stronger root system  and be less vulnerable to storm damage.

Use Bamboo in Darwin as a screening plant, a hedge or barrier, or choose the highly ornamental varieties for use as feature plants in the garden. Bamboo is also suited for planting around outdoor living areas to provide protection from both wind and sun, it also affords an added degree of privacy.

Some gardeners are growing varieties for commercial bamboo shoot production. Others are growing the giant Dendrocalamus “Black asper”
