Abies - Firs Plant Profile and Growing Hints

Abies are a group of over 50 species of evergreen conifers with symetrical shapes. Abies range from dwarf varieties suitable for rockeries and patio pots such as Abies Koreana Tundra, to small trees Abies Squamata (Flaky Fir) with rich brown bark and purple cones.

Larger Abies such as Abies Firma (Japanese Fir) and Abies Homolepsis (Nikko Fir) are majestic feature trees. Abies are resilient but prefer cooler climates with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils.

Abies concolor is a popular medium growing species and cultivars such as 'compacta' and 'archers dwarf' are much smaller.

Abies squamata, or 'Flaky fir' has fantastic bark and Abies nordmaniana 'golden spreader' is a great low growing ground cover
