The Bodhi Tree – Ficus Religiosa
Ficus religiosa is commonly known as the ‘Bodhi tree’ or ‘Bo Tree’ and it has special significance for Buddhists. It was in Bodgaya that Siddhartha sat beneath this tree while he attained enlightenment and became Buddha. Used widely in Buddhist Temples and Ashrams around the world it is also a tree used widely in Bonsai.
So this tree is all about enlightenment, wisdom and the peaceful road of life and is a place to meditate. Heart shaped leaves with a distinctive extended tip it is semi evergreen and does produce small fruits. So also known as the ‘Sacred Fig’.
The tree is also important in Ayurvedic healing with the leaves, seeds, fruit, sap, roots and bark all having a place
Propagation is from seed or from cuttings and this is a tree that will strike fairly easily. Although they can reach a height of 20 – 30 m often they are grown in containers where the root system is constricted.
