Brahmi Plant or Memory Plant
Popular in Ayurvedic medicine, the Brahmi plant is a perennial plant also commonly referred to as ‘The Memory Plant’. Widely used in herbal medicines and is often used as a tea in India. Brahmi may also be used as a green salad type vegetable, although it does have a bitter taste.
The botanical name for Bacopa Monnieri and can be grown at home and has been used in traditional medicine in India for over 2000 years. It is reputed to improve memory and increase mental alertness.
This is a low growing plant that will spread in good conditions. We suggest growing it in containers or troughs to confine it. It will take root easily so can become a bit of a weed if grown in the garden.
Care
Brahmi plants are a a perennial plant with a creeping habit.
Best grown in part shade, or afternoon shade this is a plant that requires water during dry periods and is regarded as frost tender.
This is a plant that can easily be grown in pots. We suggest using a seaweed based liquid fertiliser.
How to grow Brahmi.
You will either be growing the plant from seeds, cuttings or root division.
- Root division is the easiest method simply dig up, divide and replant.
- Cuttings are fairly also fairly easy. Cuttings can be taken in spring to summer and grown in standard potting mix. You will need to provide humidity (through misting) until new growth commences.
- Seed can be sown in spring, again keep moist until the seeds germinate.
You do need provide adequate water at all times.
