A Low Growing Camellia

This is a Camellia japonica C. lutchuensis hybrid, and Camellia Quintessence is a very low growing plant with a natural spreading weeping to cascading habit it is slow growing and lends itself to a range of garden uses.

Small white flowers, flushed with pink, yellow anthers and flowers appear from mid to late winter into spring depending on the climate zone.

Fragrance is pleasant but slight while foliage is a mid to deep green with toothed leaf margins.

With its ground hugging growth habit this is an excellent selection for growing in a container where it will eventually weep over the side. Use it as a ground cover plant or along a low retaining wall.

Over time it will form a small rounded mound, it tends not to send out tall shoots and makes great rock garden plant.

How to Grow Camellia Quintessence

Like most other camellia varieties’ position where it is protected from the hot afternoon sun is best. A humus rich well drained slightly acidic soil if ideal.

  • Mulch around the plant to provide a cool moist root run.
  • Fertilise in late winter to spring, again in early summer and once more at the end of summer.
  • This is a camellia that is easy to prune although due to its slow growing nature frequent pruning will not be required.
