Camellia Nuccio’s Gem – A formal White Camellia
One of the more compact growing white flowering Camellias is Camellia japonica Nuccio’s Gem. Being a formal double, with clean white flowers, Nuccio’s Gem lends itself to be used as a feature plant.
With the added advantage of being compact, it is also well suited to growing in a container if required. The petals are arranged in tiers and form a very neat flower. The plant itself has a naturally upright habit and will reach around 2 metres in height.
Flowering from mid to late winter well into spring, this is a plant that grows best in a part shaded position.
Camellia Nuccio’s Gem Care
Like all Camellias, Nuccio’s Gem prefers a slightly acidic soil with a pH of around 7. A humus rich, moist but well drained soil is essential.
In frost prone areas, try to plant this white flowering camellia where it will not receive early morning sun, this helps prevent the petals from becoming discoloured.
Dig in well rotted compost before planting and water in well with liquid seaweed fertiliser.
Water well through the first summers, mulching around the plant to maintain a cool mont root run.
If container growing, ensure that the pot has adequate drainage holes. Remember to top up the potting soil each year and repot every 6 – 7 years. Camellias grown in containers will require more regular fertiliser than those grown in the ground.
