Panicum virgatum

Panicum virgatum is a grass like plant that can feature well in a large container or in the ornamental border.

Growing welling full sun it requires a well drained position and is frost hardy.

Foliage is strap like and in autumn turns to a deep red. Reaching around 1m it will spread to form a tight clump.

Small red flowers turning to a golden yellow in autumn great a mist of colour above the clump.

Growing Conditions and Care

An excellent substitute for ‘Japanese Blood Grass’ as it copes well with our dry summer conditions. Simply cut of old foliage to ‘tidy up’. Larger clumps can be divided in late winter to early spring.

• Panicum virgatum  – ‘Heavy Metal’, nice foliage, upright flowers in winter, a great addition to the border.
• Panicum virgatum ‘Rotstrahlblusch’ – Also known as ‘Red Beam Switch Grass’, will reach around 1m in height. Small flowers appear as a haze in autumn.
• Panicum virgatum ‘ Rubrum’ – Grown for the way it holds it colour through autumn and winter.
