Tufted Hair Grass

Often call Hair Grass or Tussock Grass Deschampsia are a varied genus. Deschampsia cespitosa is widely used in gardens and is a clump forming perennial grass that forms a neat mound. Most species prefer a humus rich moist position to perform well.
With the plumes of seed heads appearing in late summer to autumn they make a useful addition to the garden adding structure through to winter. Also known as hair grasses due to the fine nature of the foliage these are an easy care plant given some moisture.
We would suggest looking for Deschampsia cespitosa or the named cultivars, rather than other species as these are less likely to self seed, the species will self seed, some to readily for our liking.
