Tree Guard Information Sheet
Tree Guards are increasingly used for the protection of seedling trees. Tree guards help stop animals from damaging or destroying seedlings and can greatly increase the success rate of tree plantings by reducing wind damage. (see picture right)

Tree guards and plant guards are also of great use in public areas, streets and parks to help prevent damage to both new and established trees. Decorative tree guards are available.

It is more efficient to buy tree guards with stakes supplied as the stakes will be designed for the specific guard.

Types of Tree Guards

  • Plastic tree guards
Economical UV stabilised plastic ‘sleeves’, best suited to seedling trees, they can help with growth by increasing warmth and humidity as well as preventing rabbits from eating new growth. Usually fixed with bamboo or hardwood stakes, these are the cheapest form of tree guard.
  • Corflute tree guides
A more robust and rigid tree guard than lightweight plastic. Installed with a hardwood stake, provide stronger protection from rabbits and the animals. They are easier to reuse and as they come in one piece with flexible seams they can be laid flat for storage. Also recomended for use close to housing as they do not make a noise in strong winds,
  • Steel tree guards
Found in commercial applications and widely used in street plantings to prevent mechanical damage. Usually a permanent fixture.
  • Mesh trees guards
Usually a flexible plastic mesh that comes in rolls, cut to size and attached to a timber stake driven into the ground. Flexible, allows light and rain in, provides for good air circulation. Steel mesh is also available

If you are considering transplanting larger trees then using specialist tree transplanters is a way of  minimising the risk of loss and transplant shock. Some transplanters also have facilities for short term or long term storage and maintenance of advanced trees if required.

Some companies offer an ‘after transplant’ maintenance service to help ensure long term survival of newly transplanted trees.

How to Tree Transplanters Work.

Tree transplanters and tree relocating services are able to transplant even established trees, they use specialist equipment such as tree spades to allow large established trees and shrubs to be moved or transplanted.

Trees are often relocated, relocation allows mature trees to be saved from development sites and placed in new surroundings. Trees can also be moved within a development to maximize position and impact.
