All weed matting is not the same, some products are permeable to air and water as well as being degradable lasting from 2 – 5 years depending on the amount of sunlight it receives. A few are even certified for use in organic applications.
In wholesale nurseries weed mat is often used as a shield or ground cover to help prevent weeds from growing between potted plants. It reduces labor costs and improve to only the look of the nursery, but also productivity by helping eliminate weed competition with plants.

Also useful for beneath shallow rooted trees where weeds compete with the roots however weed killers and mechanical weed removal will disturb roots systems and are not appropriate.
