WHOLESALE POTTING MIX and GROWING MEDIUMS
Wholesale potting mix is available in bulk, or packed in bags, either as a standard mix or specially formulated to the different needs of propagation nurseries. Different plants require different attributes in a growing medium and these are related to drainage, pH and fertiliser.
Larger growers may ‘adjust’ potting mix using soil mixing machines to achieve more exact mixes for individual needs. Foe example any potting mix for Australian Native plants needs to be low in phosphorus, camellias require a more acidic potting mix than peonies.
So which is the ‘Best Potting’ mix ?
No such thing, its the right potting mix for your application.
Even with fertilizers it will depend on the type of growth you are trying to promote, general plant growth, fruit, leaf growth. Mixes can be formulated to meet specific requirements.
Choosing the right potting mix will depend on a number of factors
- The type of plant you are growing.
This can relate to drainage, however it also is determined by the soil acidity required, the nutrients required by the plant and other growth requirements. - The type of pot you are using.
Put simply some pots dry out far more quickly than other, so different formulas are needed.
Free Draining Potting Mix
A number of plants require free draining potting mix, these include succulents, many Australian native plants and Cycads. You can but specialist mixes for succulents, and these will suit some other plants. Potting mixes for Orchids are generally very free draining, usually very course and pink bark chips of various grades are used.
You can also amend normal potting mix to drain more freely. Make you own by using the following mix.
- 3 parts ordinary potting mix.
- 1 part coarse washed sand.
You need to know :
- How quickly the potting mix drains.
- The pH of the potting mix.
- How much water the potting mix retains – and this is different to how quickly it drains.
- The nutrients that are in the potting mix, usually in terms of what fertiliser is in it.
Caution
- All potting soils need to handled carefully. They can be harmful to health and have been known to carry Legionella disease. You should always wear gloves, avoid breathing in the mix, keep the mix moist when handling to prevent dust and wash exposed skin thoroughly after handling.
