Westringia, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
Westringia fruticosa is known as coastal rosemary or native rosemary. Widely used as a hedging plant and useful in a number of landscaping applications where a drought tolerant shrub is required.
Dozens of species and cultivars are available from selected wholealers, many with different growth habits, foliage and flower colours. Generally these are a very hardy plant with attractive foliage and small white to mauve flowers.
They are drought tolerant once established and grow well in full sun.
Popular Westringia species and cultivars include:
- Westringia ‘Wynyabbie Gem’
- Westringia ‘Jervis Gem’
- Westringia ‘Grey Box’
- Westringia ‘Zena’
Westringia are used widely in landscaping and are suitable for low hedges. They are generally very tough and fairly drought tolerant.
- Fast growing suited to full sun to part shade.
- Prune lightly and regularly from establishment to maintain shape and size
- Excellent for coastal conditions
- Flowers are small purple to mauve from spring to summer
- Foliage is a grey to olive green with silvery undersides.
- Reaches around 3m in height, best kept to 2m or less.
