PLANTING A MURRAYA PANICULATA HEDGE
If you are looking for a good dense hedge for a little privacy, landscapers will often recommend Murraya paniculata.
It is easy to prune, provides privacy and is evergreen. Particularly suited to those in warmer climates, Sydney and northwards, and Perth, it will grow well in cooler areas as long as it is in a warm sunny frost free position.
Murraya paniculata is often call Orange Jessamine or Mock Orange because of the fragrant flowers. Well suited for use as a hedging plant M. paniculata will grow to 2-3m. Creamy white fragrant flowers in spring with a second flush in late summer to autumn.
Growth rate is regarded as medium to fast, in good conditions, suitable soil and warm climate the growth rate will be faster than in cooler climates, or poor soil.
Planting
Plants should be spaced at 50cm centers, you can reduce spacing to 40cm for a quicker, tighter growth habit.
Murraya Paniculata is a moderate grower and will take 2 years or so to reach 1M high. Prune and fertilize twice a year, spring is ideal and autumn is also suitable.
Pruning
Prune lightly twice a year during the first two years of growth to ensure a bushy habit. Promote growth by watering and fertilizing with a slow release fertilizer. Provide Murraya Paniculata with a cool root run by mulching.
Varieties
- Murraya Paniculata ‘Min A Min’ – This is a dwarf form that will only reach around 1m in height. An excellent low hedge and a good container plant where it can be pruned to a neat shape.
