Photinia hedge
Photinia hedge

Photinia – A Hardy hedging Plant.

Photinia or Chinese Firebush is a fantastic evergreen screening or hedging plant. As its name implies it is indeed robust and will grow up to 2m in 3-4 years. New foliage is a bright crimson.

Although Photinia can be used as feature tree, it is as hedging plants that they have earned their claim to fame. Great foliage, easy to prune and they do make a good screening plant.

Photina varieties for hedges include:

  • P. robusta is widely used as a windbreak and is reasonably drought tolerant. Prune back to keep in shape.
  • P. glabra rubens is the finer leafed variety.
  • P. fraseri Red Robin is a fast growing species to 6m while Photinia serrulata or ‘Chinese Photinia’ will grow to 7-8m. All growth rates and heights will vary and depend on local conditions.
  • Photinia ‘Superhedge’ is a popular cultivar and should be planted about 1.2m apart to form a dense hedge or screen. Cold tolerant and growing at a rate of 1.5 – 2m a year depending on conditions this self branching and bushy.

Pruning Photinia Hedges

Prune Photina hedges at least twice a year for best results. Once in autumn and again in spring, fertilize after pruning.

When plants are young and yet to reach the desired height remember to tip prune 2-3 times a year, taking only 1-2 cm each time, this encourages branching and a denser foliage growth.
